Zelleta is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill (also known as the mini-pill) used to prevent pregnancy. It contains the active ingredient desogestrel, which is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Unlike combined oral contraceptive pills, Zelleta does not contain oestrogen, making it suitable for women who cannot tolerate or are advised against taking oestrogen. Zelleta is effective at preventing pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and in some cases, it may also stop ovulation. It is taken continuously every day without a break.
Zelleta primarily works by thickening the cervical mucus, which creates a barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. In about 60% of women, it also prevents ovulation, providing an additional layer of contraceptive protection. By stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries and altering the uterine lining, Zelleta helps to effectively prevent pregnancy. Since it’s a progestogen-only pill, it is particularly suitable for women who are breastfeeding, over 35, or who cannot use contraceptives containing oestrogen.
Zeletta tablets should be used as prescribed by a healthcare professional and only after reading the instructions.
The active ingredient in Zelleta is desogestrel.
The inactive ingredients are potato starch, lactose anhydrous, stearic acid, and silica colloidal anhydrous among others.
